Some odd stuff

This is the vase that i was talking about last week that i was going to assemble with two pieces! ive never assembled a piece on the wheel before and im happy with how it turned out! when i put it together it seemed very boring so i added a texture to the top half and then once i got that done i realised that it made the bottom half look boring so i added some clay balls to the bottom!

I feel like this brings alot of attention to the top of the piece and not alot to the bottom...however i have lots of mixed feelings towards it. I like it alot because its a very new idea for me but i'm not really sure!

Big Day

I threw two bags of clay today from 11am till 4pm.

There is some more stuff but im working on a vase with attached sections so it wouldnt make sense to show pictures until the vase is completed! I tried doing full dimples on some vase forms and i kind of like the look! I like the general idea but there is alot i can do to fix the overall shape so it pleases the idea more :] basically im just making a ton of stuff for the woodfire and i was in my zone today so didnt want to stop! Ive made the bodys of three more comfy pitchers that hopefully i can finnish up tomorrow!

critique

lets do a critique with the whole class because the last two kinda succked alot. when we did the notes everyone was vvery passive and nonchalant and when we did the table groups it was better but i feel like people just liked that beause it was easy. with the whole class we could actually get some good feedback and good ideas. atleast thats what i think. heres what ive been up to! I threw a few vase forms because i got bored of my concentration for a little after struggling with the comfy pitchers :].

                                                                                                                                                         

end of the semester!

sooooo yeah this is what ive been up to! started some new pitchers with the comfy idea, made a teapot, and made several vase forms. I like porcelain when im making cups but when i tried to make a bottle shape...i learned that it can be very frusterating.

Cup Addition

Soo as you can see kept the thumb dimple and instead of having seperate dimples for each finger on the opposite side i added a coil and just imprinted my fingers into the coil. I think this is alot more comfy than my other idea and hopefully i can continue this without too much fuss. The only problem is that this limits the size of my cups to the size shown in the picture. Another addition i made was to the bottom of the cup. I made an indent about the size of a pinky ( oddly for a pinky) on the bottom. This may not make sense or seem comfy but once i get this fired feel free to pick it up and you'll understand! I've been throwing alot of different stuff this week but this is the type of cup that i want to keep making so i thought id share!

Merry Christmas everyone!! Its been really really cold so i havent been throwing except these last couple days! But anyways heres what ive been up to!

These are some orby/reverse dimple cups that i have been wanting to try out. These are the first ones that i have made and i really want to make more. They are alot of fun because there's so many possibilities for different styles and textures but i can still keep the same basic shape and idea. I plan on working with these alot more in January and hopefully i can come up with some cool ideas! On these cups there are three dimples (thumb, index, and ring finger). I was thinking about making these cups both left and right handed but i think instead i'm just going to make all the cups a size where your hand can fit into the dimples on both sides. If that description didnt make sense, it will once you see the cups in person! Happy Holidays and i hope everyone is having a great break!

The key to throwing quickly is to understand what the clay can and cannot do. You'll understand what i mean once you watch this video. This potter throws a large bowl shape in four-five raises (not counting any coning and counting his rib raises).

slow week

This week i spent alot of time glazing and loading kilns and not so much time on actually making stuff. i was able to finnish my lidded jar and i started another vase/jar (havent decided yet) today. Here's the jar that i finished this week.

The texture is from a scoring tool that amy got me but ive found myself more interested in the texture it creates rather than its intended use. I like it because it creates more of an organic texture as apposed to the metal rip scrapes that are evenly spread out. I wish the lid on this jar was bigger but i like that it follows the form of the body. I'm not sure if i like the handle but after trying 3 or 4 others i think that this one is the best looking one so far.
